The series examines how our currency unites us as nation yet divides us into social classes, spending tribes and individual consumers. Moving out of the recession, Britain’s spending has never been so fascinating, and how we choose to flash our cash shapes who we are, from shoppers purchasing designer handbags, labels and clothes alongside those thrifty bargain hunters who share tips, from putting Aldi coffee granules in a Fortnum And Mason tin to salvaging food that has reached its best before date.
Anne will leave the comfort of the studio to journey around the country meeting people across the spending spectrum, observing first-hand just how we spend our money. In episode one, we meet two families who reveal their personal finances and shopping budgets in order to make ends meet, from juggling young children to feed, school and entertain alongside holidays, after-school clubs, and desiring the latest high tech gadgets. Anne also meets a frugal Baroness with inherited wealth, a self-made businessman owning a multi-million-pound trailer park, much like the mobile home he grew up in, and a freegan living in a homemade house in the woods. In episode two, Anne asks whether money truly makes us happy, meeting people from differing economic backgrounds around the country.
