Greenlit: Obesity: The Post Mortem, BBC3

Obesity: The Post Mortem  (1 x 60′) – Documentary that investigates the devastating impact obesity has on the human body, in a UK autopsy first.

Leading pathologist Dr. Mike Osborn, a consultant for the Royal College of Pathologists, and Assistant Pathology Technician Carla Valentine will perform a televised autopsy on a female donor who weighed nearly 17 stone. It is the first time in the UK a post mortem has been carried out for this scientific purpose.

It’s an area of medicine where there is still lots to learn, and the specialist team open up the body to discover what excess fat does to vital organs. With the NHS warning obesity can reduce life expectancy, and almost three quarters of British adults likely to be overweight or obese in less than 20 years, it is vital medical science study an epidemic that shows no signs of slowing.

In today’s world of selfies and social media there is plenty of focus on how people look, but this programme shows what’s happening to our insides – the fat choking our organs that’s killing us.

Viewers will see how the body was transported 5,000 miles from Long Beach California, a city obsessed with body image, to the post-mortem table in London.

The documentary also features a cast of young contributors who reveal how biology, psychology and food have contributed to making them fat, and what it means to live with the day-to-day reality of obesity.

Accompanying the film is extra content delving into the world of pathology and going behind the scenes on the UK’s first post mortem, aiming to uncover the internal effects of obesity on the body.
